Master Interal Triggers

Zoey Chance is a professor at the Yale School of Management. In his TED talk, he shared a story of his life which was about his addiction to Strive smart pedometer. The device was marketed as “your personal trainer in your pocket” meaning your personal trainer in your pocket, whenever, wherever you want. But Zoey says based on her personal experience “Strive Pedometer is not a personal trainer in your pocket but a devil”.

Strive is actually a start-up from Silicon Valley. It has been created by video game designers, because only they know how to hack users' minds. In Strive, you get walking points and there are challenges in it, for which you get rewards. Users can also compete with other players and there is a ranking according to the leaderboards.

Zoey very quickly became an addict of this pedometer. She used to walk all the time, even while eating, reading a summary or talking to her husband. She would go round the whole house, from the living room to the kitchen and dining room and back again to the living room. She used to do all this to take more steps so that she could get maximum points.

Zoey started walking so much that she did not even get a chance to spend time sitting with family and friends. She did not like to sit even for a minute. He only had conversations with one person, who was his colleague, Ernest, because he used to use the strive pedometer just like him. Ernest and Zoey would always challenge each other and compete with each other to see who walks more steps.

Then a point also came that Zoey took 24,000 steps in a day. Then one night, Zoey was preparing to sleep. While she was still brushing, her Strive app received a notification of a tempting offer. It was a pop up challenge that read "If you climb 20 stairs now, we'll give you triple points!" Zoey thought that if she could go up and down the stairs of the basement twice, she could win this challenge. Zoey completed the challenge and won the reward. But then another challenge popped up.There was another offer of triple points, this time 40 steps were to be played. Zoey also completed this challenge immediately.
